Relocating Pets Between New Zealand and Taiwan

New Zealand runs one of the most biosecure borders on Earth, and it publishes every rule — the trap isn't secrecy, it's precision. Taiwan is an approved origin, but dogs especially face a battery of tests and treatments whose validity windows are measured in days and sometimes hours before the flight. Going the other way is, mercifully, one of Taiwan's gentlest imports.

Two directions, two tempos

DirectionClassificationWhat it means in practice
Taiwan → New Zealand MPI approved, rabies-controlled origin Import permit, rabies titer, a battery of pre-export tests and treatments on strict clocks, direct-to-NZ cargo arrival and minimum 10 days at an MPI-approved quarantine facility
New Zealand → Taiwan Taiwan lists New Zealand as a designated rabies-free area APHIA e-permit ≥ 20 days, microchip and certification — no titer, no quarantine when compliant

Quick compliance checklist: NZ ⇄ Taiwan

Corridor-specific items only — universal basics are on the Pet Travel Hub.

RequirementWho rules itCritical window
TPE → NZ: MPI import permit ("permit to import") New Zealand MPI Apply well ahead; the permit anchors every later test date and the quarantine booking
TPE → NZ: rabies titer (RNAT) ≥ 0.5 IU/mL MPI via approved labs Drawn after vaccination inside MPI's mandated timing relative to the flight
TPE → NZ: dog disease testing (Brucella canis, Ehrlichia canis, Leptospira, Babesia gibsoni) MPI-specified labs and methods Each test has its own pre-departure validity band — some open only 16–30 days before the flight
TPE → NZ: parasite treatments MPI protocol, recorded by the treating vet Final treatments sit within days — and one within about 48 hours — of departure
TPE → NZ: quarantine booking (MPI-approved facility) Private approved facilities, MPI-audited Minimum 10 days; Auckland and Christchurch facilities book out months ahead
NZ → TPE: APHIA import e-permit Taiwan APHIA (2026 portal) Filed ≥ 20 days pre-arrival; NZ-side export certification aligned to the same dates

The chronological timeline

  1. Permit and quarantine first T−5 months

    • NZ-bound: lodge the MPI permit application and reserve the quarantine space in the same week — the scarcer of the two sets your travel date.
    • Taiwan-bound: your planning horizon is about six weeks; the e-permit is the only long lead item.
  2. Titer and baseline vet work T−4 to T−3 months

    • Chip verification, rabies vaccination, RNAT draw at an approved lab — sequenced so results return before the permit's test schedule begins.
  3. Book direct uplift T−2 months

    • NZ requires arrival as manifest cargo into Auckland or Christchurch; routing via Australia adds that country's own transit rules, so direct or single-clean-transit itineraries win.
  4. The testing gauntlet T−30 to T−16 days

    • Dogs run the disease panel inside its validity band; a positive or equivocal result needs retesting time you only have if you started early.
  5. Treatments-and-certificates week T−10 days to T−48 hours

    • Final parasite treatments land inside their hour-level windows while the APHIA branch inspection (7–10 days pre-flight — see the Taiwan export guide) issues the official certification.
  6. Fly, quarantine, homecoming T−0 to T+10 days

    • Arriving NZ: transfer to the booked quarantine facility; visits per facility schedule, release after MPI sign-off.
    • Arriving Taiwan: APHIA counter clearance, then straight home.
The NZ-bound failure mode is window arithmetic: five different validity bands — permit, titer, disease tests, treatments, certificate — must all be simultaneously true on departure day. Shift the flight by a week and two of them silently expire; that's how a fully vaccinated, fully tested dog becomes non-compliant without anything "going wrong".

Precision is the whole job. It happens to be ours.

Kiwis heading to Taipei and Taiwanese families heading to Auckland tell us the same thing: the rules were all public, and it still felt impossible to hold them in one head. You don't have to. Send us your dates and your dog's vaccine book — we'll send back the calendar.
