The Taiwan import sequence, stage by stage
Work backwards from your intended arrival. Each stage produces the evidence the next one needs, so a single changed record or date can move the permit, the flight, the certificate or the quarantine outcome.

Microchip, vaccination and rabies titer T−8 to T−7 months
The order is fixed:
- Record a readable 15-digit ISO microchip.
- Give the qualifying rabies vaccination after the chip.
- Draw the FAVN/RNATT sample after that vaccination, and obtain ≥ 0.5 IU/ml from a WOAH reference or APHIA-designated laboratory.
A later chip, the wrong order or a failed result means re-vaccinating and re-testing, which restarts the timeline.

- Standard entry: the sample must generally be 90 days to one year old on arrival.
- Quarantine waiver: the sample must generally be 180 days to one year old, with the permit and reporting conditions below also met.
- The rabies vaccination must stay continuously valid throughout.

How far ahead do I need to start importing a pet into Taiwan?
The titer sample sets the schedule. Standard entry usually needs roughly four months once the microchip and vaccination are already in place. Pursuing the quarantine waiver generally requires seven to eight months, because the sample must be at least 180 days old on arrival and additional reporting conditions apply.
Can Taiwan's seven-day post-entry quarantine be waived?
Sometimes. The titer sample must generally be 180 days to one year old on arrival, and the permit and reporting route must also comply — either filing at least 120 days ahead, or an accepted direct report from the laboratory or the exporting authority. APHIA makes the final decision, so quarantine space should still be reserved.
What if we need to travel in less than 180 days?
The move may still be possible. A titer taken 90 to 179 days before arrival can meet standard entry timing, but it normally does not qualify for the quarantine waiver. In practice the difference is usually the seven-day post-entry quarantine rather than whether your pet can travel.
Does the microchip really have to come before the rabies vaccination?
Yes. The valid sequence is microchip, rabies vaccination, then titer draw. If the chip is recorded later, or the sample predates the qualifying vaccination, the vaccination and test may have to be repeated — which restarts the deadlines that depend on them.
Our pet is coming from a rabies-free country. Is the process different?
Yes. Pets departing from a country or zone Taiwan recognises as rabies-free generally follow a lighter procedure, covered on each country's corridor page. Recognition can change, so check the current APHIA classification for your specific origin rather than an older summary.
What happens when we land in Taiwan?
APHIA scans your pet and checks the microchip, vaccination history, titer result, health certificate and import permit against the live animal. Your pet is then released or transferred to the reserved quarantine facility. A mismatch may delay release, because it cannot always be corrected at the airport.
