Relocating Pets Between Taiwan and Vietnam
Vietnam is one of the more forgiving destinations in the region for a Taiwanese pet: no antibody test, no routine quarantine, and an import permit that most accompanied pets do not need at all. The discipline this corridor demands is at the end, in a health certificate window measured in days.

One corridor, two rulebooks
Vietnam's Department of Animal Health looks for identity, a valid rabies vaccination and a recent health certificate, and inspects on arrival. Taiwan's APHIA, going the other way, applies the full rabies-infected-origin protocol — so as on most Southeast Asian routes, the return leg is the one that needs a six-month runway rather than a six-week one.
| Direction | Classification | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Taiwan → Vietnam | Vietnam admits accompanied pets on identity, vaccination and a current health certificate | ISO microchip implanted before vaccination, rabies vaccination more than 30 days and less than 12 months before travel, a government health certificate issued within 7 days, and inspection on arrival. No titer, and no quarantine when the file is clean. |
| Vietnam → Taiwan | Taiwan (APHIA) does not list Vietnam as a designated rabies-free area | Titer of at least 0.5 IU/mL sampled 90 days to 1 year before arrival, an e-permit at least 20 days ahead, and 7 days of post-entry quarantine unless the 180-day and 120-day conditions are both met. |
Quick compliance checklist: Taiwan ⇄ Vietnam
Corridor-specific requirements only — the universal basics (ISO chip before vaccine, IATA crate, live-animal flight space) are covered once on the Pet Travel Hub.
| Requirement | Who rules it | Critical window |
|---|---|---|
| TPE → SGN/HAN: ISO microchip | Vietnam Department of Animal Health | Implanted before the rabies vaccination — a vaccination that pre-dates the chip does not count |
| TPE → SGN/HAN: rabies vaccination | Vietnam Department of Animal Health | More than 30 days and less than 12 months before travel; the pet must be at least 3 months old |
| TPE → SGN/HAN: government health certificate | Taiwan APHIA branch office | Issued within 7 days of arrival — the tightest routine window on this corridor |
| TPE → SGN/HAN: import permit | Vietnam Department of Animal Health | Generally required only for unaccompanied, commercial or larger consignments rather than a personal pet flying with its owner |
| TPE → SGN/HAN: arrival inspection | Animal quarantine station at the port of entry | Documents and clinical check on arrival; incomplete files risk detention or refusal |
| SGN/HAN → TPE: rabies titer ≥ 0.5 IU/mL | Taiwan APHIA, via WOAH reference or designated labs | Blood sampled 90 days to 1 year before arrival; it cannot be tested in Taiwan |
| SGN/HAN → TPE: APHIA e-permit and quarantine | Taiwan APHIA e-permit portal | At least 20 days ahead, or 120 days to have the 7-day facility stay waived |
Taiwan's APHIA runs dog and cat imports through its online e-permit portal, with document uploads validated against the microchip record. We re-verify the current protocol on both sides of this corridor for every booking.
The chronological timeline
Read this top to bottom: each step's validity depends on the one before it, which is why a late fix costs months rather than days.
-
Chip and vaccinate in the right order T−3 months
- Microchip first, rabies vaccination second, then let 30 days pass before travel.
- Taipei-bound instead? Start six months out — the titer draw, not the vaccine, is your gate.
-
Taipei-bound: draw titer blood T−6 months
- 0.5 IU/mL or higher at a WOAH reference or APHIA-designated laboratory.
- Draw at least 180 days before arrival to keep the quarantine waiver on the table.
-
Decide whether you need an import permit T−6 weeks
- Flying with your pet in cabin or as accompanied baggage usually means no permit is needed.
- Shipping it unaccompanied as air cargo, or moving several animals, changes that — and the permit has to be arranged before the flight.
-
Book uplift T−4 weeks
- China Airlines, EVA and Vietnam Airlines all serve the route; in-cabin allowances vary considerably by carrier and by aircraft.
- Heat embargoes apply on this routing for much of the year — early departures buy you margin.
-
The seven-day window T−7 days
- The health certificate must be issued within 7 days of arrival, then endorsed by the APHIA branch office alongside the export inspection.
- A delayed flight can push you outside this window; rebooking the certificate is easier than rebooking the pet, but both need watching.
-
Fly and clear T−0
- Arriving Vietnam: quarantine station check at the airport, then home with you.
- Arriving Taiwan: APHIA reconciliation, then release or the reserved facility slot.
What 886JetPet handles on this corridor
Your Taiwan ⇄ Vietnam move, fully handled
We time the certificate to the arrival date rather than the departure, keep a re-issue path open if the flight moves, and set up the blood work so that returning to Taipei later is a booking rather than a six-month reset.

Taiwan ⇄ Vietnam: common questions
Does Vietnam require a rabies titer test?
No. Vietnam accepts an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given more than 30 days and less than 12 months before travel, and a recent government health certificate. The antibody test belongs to the return leg into Taiwan, not the outbound one.
Do I need an import permit for Vietnam?
Usually not for a personal pet travelling with its owner. Permits come into play for unaccompanied animals moving as air cargo, for commercial imports and for larger groups — and in those cases the permit must be arranged before departure.
Is there quarantine in Vietnam?
Not for compliant pets. The animal quarantine station at the port of entry checks the documents and examines the pet, and healthy animals with a complete file continue home the same day. Missing paperwork or signs of illness can lead to detention or refusal.
How tight is the health certificate window really?
Tight enough to plan around: the certificate must be issued within seven days of your pet's arrival in Vietnam, which means a flight delay can invalidate a document that was correct when signed. Build the vet appointment as late in that window as your export inspection allows, not as early as possible.
What is required to bring a pet from Vietnam to Taiwan?
A microchip, an inactivated rabies vaccination 30 days to a year old, a passing rabies titer of at least 0.5 IU/mL sampled between 90 days and one year before arrival, an APHIA import permit filed at least 20 days ahead, and 7 days of facility quarantine unless you qualify for the waiver by sampling 180 days out and filing 120 days ahead.
Easy is not the same as casual
Vietnam asks for little, but it asks for it on a short clock and at the worst possible moment — the week you are also packing a household. Hand us the last ten days and the return planning, and enjoy the part where your pet simply walks out of the airport with you.
