How Do Airlines Transport Pets to Taiwan?

Pets don't ride in the luggage bin. Inside the pressurised live-animal hold, the three carriage classes into Taipei, and how a crate actually gets from your door to the plane.

First, the myth to bust

Pets do not ride in the loose luggage bin. Live animals travel in a separate, pressurised and temperature-controlled compartment of the hold — the same air and climate as the passenger cabin above, just quieter and darker. Understanding how the system actually works removes most of the fear owners carry about the flight.

Three ways a pet flies to Taiwan

MethodHow it works
Manifest cargo The pet flies as a booked live-animal shipment with its own air waybill. This is how professional relocations run: it works even when the owner isn't on the same flight, and it's the only option for large dogs. Handled by the airline's dedicated live-animal team.
Excess/accompanied baggage The pet flies in the hold on the owner's own ticket, checked in like baggage but loaded into the live-animal hold. Available on some carriers and routes, for pets under a size limit.
Cabin Small cats and dogs in a soft carrier under the seat, where the airline and route allow it. Limited on long-haul Taiwan services and capped per flight.

Which one suits your pet depends on size, breed and route — the trade-offs for cats are in cabin vs cargo, and airline selection in choosing an airline for Taipei.

What happens on the day

  1. Check-in at the cargo or live-animal desk

    • The crate is inspected for IATA compliance, documents are verified, and the pet is booked into the hold.
  2. Holding, then loading last

    • Animals wait in a climate-controlled area and are typically loaded last and unloaded first, minimising time on the tarmac.
  3. The flight

    • In the pressurised hold, lights dimmed, temperature regulated. Most pets settle and sleep once airborne.
  4. Arrival and clearance at Taoyuan

    • Unloaded first, then processed by APHIA — permit, certificate and a live chip scan. See the arrival paperwork.

Why direct matters

Every transfer adds handling, heat exposure and risk. A direct flight into Taipei removes an entire layer — see how services manage layovers and transit, and why summer heat embargoes can reshape a routing.
