Is Pet Quarantine Required When Moving to Taiwan?

Sometimes — and the answer is set months before the flight. How titer timing decides between a waived stay, a seven-day quarantine, and the rabies-free fast track.

The short answer

Sometimes — and whether it applies is decided months before your flight, not on arrival day. Taiwan's standard post-arrival quarantine for imported dogs and cats is seven days, but it can be waived entirely when your FAVN rabies titer is timed correctly. Pets from designated rabies-free areas skip the whole question. So the honest answer is: it's often avoidable, if you plan for it.

The three possible outcomes

Your situationQuarantine
From a designated rabies-free area (Japan, Australia, NZ, UK, Hawaii, etc.), light track No FAVN titer required; no quarantine
Rabies-origin country, FAVN sample 180 days–1 year old on arrival, permit filed correctly Seven-day quarantine waived — same-day release
Rabies-origin country, FAVN sample 90–180 days old on arrival Standard seven-day quarantine applies

In other words, the difference between a same-day homecoming and a week in kennels is simply when the blood was drawn — the full mechanics are in our FAVN explainer.

How to plan for the waiver

Because the waiver needs a titer that's at least 180 days old on arrival, you have to start earlier than the bare minimum for entry. That's the main reason our six-month countdown exists — building in the extra months so the waiver is on the table rather than out of reach. The waiver also depends on filing the import permit and pre-notification correctly, which is where a missed detail can cost you the exemption you earned by waiting.

If quarantine does apply

Seven days is short, humane and predictable — not a punishment. Your pet stays in an APHIA-supervised facility, and compliant paperwork keeps the stay to its minimum. What the facilities, visiting rules and costs are actually like is covered in our quarantine guide, and the errors that turn a short stay into a long one are in 7 mistakes that extend quarantine.
