The honest verdict
Taiwan is one of the most dog-friendly places in Asia — and it rarely gets credit for it. Taipei alone offers kilometres of car-free riverside trails, fenced off-leash dog runs, a real café culture that welcomes animals, and a dense bench of excellent, often English-speaking, veterinary hospitals. The pet community is warm and organised. For an expat, day-to-day life with a dog here is genuinely good.
The caveats are real too: apartments are small, summers are punishingly hot and humid, and finding a landlord who accepts pets takes work. This is the balanced picture — not the brochure one.
What makes it work
- Outdoor space. The riverside park network (Tamsui, Keelung, Xindian, Jingmei) gives you flat, safe, near-continuous walking that makes daily exercise effortless. Mountain trails ring the city for fitter dogs.
